DisneylandForward - Disney Anaheim Expansion Plans Controversy Debates Hopeful Benefits and Environmental Concerns

DisneylandForward Proposal:

Disney aims to invest $1.9 billion over the next decade in revamping Disneyland. The DisneylandForward¹ plan includes adding mixed-use amenities and attractions, transforming Walt Disney’s original theme park. The Anaheim City Planning Commission approved sending the plan to the full City Council after a conte1ntious meeting.²

As part of the deal, Disney commits to providing over $100 million in community benefits for Anaheim. These funds will support housing, green spaces, and infrastructure improvements.

Job Creation and Labor Focus:

Disney projects significant job numbers: 8,960 jobs during construction and 4,584 jobs during operations. The promise of “100% union labor” with a focus on hiring Anaheim residents and veterans is noteworthy. The development agreement extends until 2064, emphasizing long-term commitment.³

Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger, emphasizes a shift from internal fixes to new construction.

How do local residents feel about these expansion plans?

The sentiments among local residents regarding Disney’s expansion plans in the Anaheim Resort area are mixed.

Among supporters many residents view the expansion as an opportunity for economic growth. They anticipate increased job opportunities, both during construction and ongoing operations.
The promise of community benefits, including affordable housing and green spaces, resonates positively with some residents.

Among critics some residents express concerns about the environmental impact of the expansion. They worry about air quality, noise, and the visual aesthetics of the area. Critics argue that loosening these restrictions may alter the character of the neighborhood. There are also concerns about the scale of the expansion. Some fear it could overwhelm the existing infrastructure and lead to congestion. Critics worry that the expansion could lead to more vehicular traffic in the area. Additional cars and buses could contribute to air pollution, affecting both residents and visitors. During the construction phase, emissions from heavy machinery, vehicles, and building materials may impact air quality. Once the expanded facilities are operational, increased footfall and transportation could further strain air quality.

Residents are concerned about how the expanded structures will alter the skyline and overall aesthetics of the neighborhood. They fear that large-scale developments might detract from the charm of the existing area.

Historical Context:

Longtime residents may have a deep attachment to the original Disneyland and its surroundings. For them, any significant changes can evoke nostalgia or apprehension.

Disney prides itself into incorporating several sustainable practices into its construction process, aiming to minimize environmental impact and promote a healthier planet. Every new construction project is designed with a focus on minimizing waste, water, and energy.
